Abstract

Parts that are machined in their hardened state during manufacturing are increasing in number and applications. This hard machining method has been made possible by the introduction of advanced cutting tools materials with high hot hardness. The development of ceramic cutting tools accelerates the application of the hard machining method. Furthermore, coating techniques have fortified cutting tools to be able to perform in extreme conditions. AISI D2 cold work tool steel hardened to 60 HRC has been machined by using a PVD TiNcoated aluminum oxide and titanium carbonitride (Al2O3/TiCN) ceramic cutting tool. Different cutting speeds were used to investigate the performance of the coated ceramic cutting tool. Results show that the tool life was decreased with increasing cutting speed. The possible wear mechanisms were examined by utilizing field emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM) to obtain the visual image and energy dispersive X-ray spectrometer (EDS) to identify the elements. Results indicate that the tool life decreased considerably with the increase in cutting speed, with abrasion as the major wear mechanism and chipping of the cutting edge as the failure mode.
